An Application Programming Interface (API) is a defined set of protocols, rules, and data formats that allows one software system to communicate with another. In payments, APIs are the connective tissue of the entire ecosystem: merchants use APIs to send transaction requests to gateways, gateways use APIs to communicate with card networks, and orchestration platforms use APIs to connect merchants to hundreds of payment providers simultaneously.
Modern payment APIs are typically RESTful, they use standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and return data in JSON or XML format. A payment API call to initiate a transaction will typically include the payment method token, the transaction amount, the currency, and any additional metadata, and will return an authorization response code along with a transaction record. The simplicity and standardization of REST APIs has been a major driver of the growth of the payments developer ecosystem over the past 15 years.
For merchants and platforms, the quality of a payment provider's API is a meaningful competitive differentiator. A well-designed API is predictable, well-documented, and consistent, it handles errors gracefully, returns informative response codes, supports Idempotency Keys to prevent duplicate transactions, and provides a Sandbox / Test Environment that accurately mirrors production behavior. A poorly designed API is a source of integration bugs, support escalations, and engineering frustration that compounds over time.
Payments Orchestration Platforms like Spreedly expose a single, unified API that abstracts away the varying interfaces of hundreds of underlying payment providers. Rather than learning and maintaining integrations with each provider's individual API, a merchant integrates once with the orchestration platform's API and gains access to the entire ecosystem through that single interface.
REST (Representational State Transfer) and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) are two approaches to API design. REST is the dominant standard in modern payments: it is lightweight, uses standard HTTP, and returns JSON or XML. SOAP is an older, more rigid protocol based on XML messaging, still used by some legacy payment systems and banking infrastructure.
API versioning is a practice where a provider maintains multiple versions of its API simultaneously, allowing merchants to continue using an older version while a newer version is released. In payments, this matters because breaking API changes, changes that alter response formats, remove fields, or change authentication schemes, can disrupt live transaction flows. Well-managed payment APIs maintain stable versions for extended periods and give merchants clear deprecation timelines when changes are necessary.
An idempotent API is one where making the same request multiple times produces the same result as making it once. In payments, this is critical: network timeouts and errors can cause a transaction request to be retried, and without idempotency controls, a retry could result in a duplicate charge. Payment APIs implement idempotency through Idempotency Keys, a unique identifier the merchant includes with each request, which the API uses to detect and safely handle duplicate calls.
