Embedded payments refers to the integration of payment acceptance capabilities directly into a software platform, application, or digital experience, making payments a native feature of the product rather than a separate service the user must navigate to. When a project management tool accepts subscription billing, when a restaurant management platform processes table payments, or when a gig economy app pays workers directly through the same app they use to find work, those are all examples of embedded payments.
The distinction from traditional payment integration is one of depth and ownership. A software company that redirects users to PayPal to complete a payment has integrated a payment provider into its product. A company that presents a fully branded checkout, onboards its business customers as Sub-merchants, manages disputes, and earns a share of processing revenue has embedded payments into its business model. The latter creates a fundamentally different, and more valuable, product and revenue stream.
Embedded payments matter because of the economics. Research from EY found that platforms embedding payments can double their payments-based revenue within three months of implementation. Payment revenue (earning a share of Interchange and processing margin on customer transactions) can match or exceed software subscription revenue for platforms with high transaction volumes. This makes embedded payments both a product feature and a strategic revenue lever.
The infrastructure required to embed payments well is non-trivial. Platforms need merchant onboarding (KYB (Know Your Business) checks, underwriting), fund flow management, compliance programs, and robust payment processing capability. Payfac-as-a-Service providers and Payments Orchestration Platforms have made this infrastructure accessible to platforms at earlier stages of growth than was previously possible.
Integrated payments typically refers to a payment provider's service being connected to a platform's software, the platform directs users to a third-party payment experience. Embedded payments goes further: the payment experience is owned by the platform, the merchant relationship is with the platform, and the platform earns payment revenue directly. In an embedded model, the user may not be aware they are using a third-party payment infrastructure at all.
Not necessarily. Payfac-as-a-Service providers allow platforms to offer PayFac-level experiences, fast sub-merchant onboarding, branded checkout, payment revenue share, without the platform needing to register formally as a PayFac with card networks. The Payfac-as-a-Service provider handles the regulatory and operational infrastructure, and the platform accesses it through an API.
Embedding payments increases a platform's compliance exposure relative to simply redirecting to a third-party checkout. If the platform is onboarding merchants, handling payment data, or distributing funds, it takes on PCI DSS, KYB (Know Your Business), AML (Anti-Money Laundering), and in some jurisdictions, money transmission obligations. Working with Payfac-as-a-Service providers and Payments Orchestration Platforms that are already PCI Level 1 Service Providers significantly reduces, but does not eliminate, those obligations.
