ISO 20022 is an international standard for financial messaging that defines a common language and data model for electronic financial transactions between institutions. It is used for payment messages, securities transactions, foreign exchange, and trade services. In payments specifically, ISO 20022 is replacing the older SWIFT MT message format and various domestic message standards as the global baseline for interbank payment communication.
The significance of ISO 20022 in payments is its richness. Legacy formats like SWIFT MT messages were designed in an era of constrained data transmission, they carry limited, truncated data. ISO 20022 messages use XML and JSON structures that can carry substantially more information per transaction: full beneficiary names and addresses, detailed remittance data, purpose codes, structured reference information, and LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) codes. This richer data enables better automated reconciliation, more effective AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and sanctions screening, and fewer manual interventions in payment processing.
Major migration milestones are well underway. SWIFT completed its coexistence period for ISO 20022 on high-value payments in 2025. The US Fedwire system and many domestic RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) systems have adopted or are actively migrating to ISO 20022 messaging. For businesses involved in Cross-Border Payments, treasury operations, and B2B payment flows, ISO 20022 compliance is increasingly a practical requirement.
Note: ISO 20022 is a completely different standard from ISO 3166, which is the country code standard. The "ISO" prefix simply denotes the International Organization for Standardization, which publishes both.
For most consumer-facing merchants, ISO 20022 operates behind the scenes in interbank and correspondent banking infrastructure, it affects how funds move between institutions, not how a merchant's checkout works. The impact is more direct for businesses involved in B2B payments, cross-border wire transfers, or treasury management, where richer transaction data and improved reconciliation are meaningful operational benefits.
SWIFT's legacy financial messaging format was called MT (Message Type), using structured text formats developed in the 1970s. ISO 20022 introduces MX (Message XML) format messages that replace them. SWIFT ran a coexistence period allowing both formats simultaneously, but MX is now the required format for cross-border payment messages on the SWIFT network.
Richer data in ISO 20022 messages means screening systems have more to work with. Legacy MT messages often truncated names and addresses, making it difficult to reliably match against sanctions lists. ISO 20022 messages carry full, structured beneficiary and originator information, complete names, addresses, and LEI codes, that screening engines can process with higher accuracy and fewer false positives.
