A merchant aggregator is a company that processes payments for multiple businesses under a single, aggregated merchant account rather than setting up individual accounts for each merchant. The aggregator takes on the financial and compliance responsibilities associated with the merchant relationship, while the businesses it serves transact under the aggregator's umbrella.
The term is often used interchangeably with Payment Facilitator (PayFac), and in many practical contexts the distinction is minimal. However, some industry participants use "merchant aggregator" to describe a broader range of aggregation structures, including some that do not require the formal card network registration that a PayFac requires. Spreedly's Advanced Vault product includes specific features designed for merchant aggregators, recognizing that their vault and lifecycle management needs differ from single-merchant deployments.
The aggregation model enables fast merchant onboarding, simplified compliance management, and the ability to offer embedded payment experiences at scale. It is a foundational structure for modern marketplaces, gig economy platforms, and vertical SaaS companies that need to accept and distribute payments across large numbers of counterparties.
The key risk in aggregation is portfolio exposure. An aggregator that loosely underwrites its merchants can accumulate significant fraud and chargeback liability. Card networks have become increasingly rigorous about aggregator registration and monitoring requirements in response to historical abuse of the model.
A marketplace facilitates transactions between buyers and sellers, often handling Split Payments and Disbursements to multiple parties. A merchant aggregator is a payments-specific structural description of how those transactions are processed, under a single master account rather than individual merchant accounts.
Card networks require aggregators to register formally, conduct appropriate KYB (Know Your Business) checks on the merchants they onboard, and monitor transaction activity for fraud and suspicious patterns. Acquirers sponsoring aggregators also impose their own underwriting requirements.
Aggregation dramatically reduces onboarding friction. A sub-merchant can start accepting payments without their own banking relationships, compliance programs, or payment infrastructure. For a platform whose primary value proposition is not payments, a project management tool that wants to accept subscriptions, for example, aggregation lets them add payment capability quickly without building a payments business.
