A payment vault is a secure, encrypted data store that holds tokenized payment method information, typically a Payment Token that represents a customer's card details, so those payment methods can be retrieved and used for future transactions without the customer needing to re-enter their card information. The vault is a foundational component of any payment infrastructure that supports recurring billing, saved payment methods, or multi-gateway routing.
The critical distinction between a standard vault and a universal vault lies in token portability. In a gateway-specific vault, payment tokens are issued by a single gateway and can only be used to process transactions through that same gateway. If the merchant wants to switch gateways or route a transaction to a different provider, the token is useless, the customer must re-enter their card details, or the merchant must undergo a complex and often disruptive token migration.
A universal vault stores payment tokens in a provider-agnostic format. A token stored in Spreedly's universal vault can be used to process transactions through any of the 120+ gateways and payment services in the Spreedly ecosystem. The merchant is never locked into any single provider because of their vault data. This is what makes Vault Portability a genuine commercial capability rather than a theoretical benefit.
A universal vault also enables the Dynamic Routing and Failover Routing strategies that are central to advanced Payment Orchestration. If every transaction must go to the gateway that issued the token, routing optimization is impossible. A universal vault removes that constraint entirely.
