Authorization rate, commonly called auth rate, is the percentage of payment transactions submitted for authorization that receive an approval response from the issuing bank. It is one of the most important performance metrics in payments: a higher authorization rate means more revenue captured from the same transaction volume, while a lower rate means revenue is leaking out of the payment flow in the form of declines.
Authorization rate is calculated as: approved transactions divided by total transactions submitted for authorization, expressed as a percentage. A merchant submitting 10,000 transactions and receiving 9,200 approvals has an authorization rate of 92%. The remaining 8% are declined, some for legitimate reasons (insufficient funds, stolen card), some for reasons that could potentially be addressed (soft declines, issuer-side risk scoring, missing authentication data).
Authorization rates are not uniform across transaction types, geographies, or payment providers. A domestic Visa debit card at a well-matched acquirer might authorize at 97%. A cross-border credit card transaction through a gateway with no local acquiring presence might authorize at 85%. Understanding authorization rates by card type, issuing country, gateway, and payment method is the foundation of any meaningful payment optimization strategy.
The factors that affect authorization rates include: the quality of the acquiring relationship (domestic acquirers typically achieve higher rates in their home markets), the presence and quality of 3D Secure (3DS) authentication data, Network Tokenization (which improves issuer confidence and reduces false declines), BIN Metadata enrichment (which ensures transaction data is formatted correctly for the issuing bank), and Dynamic Routing (which directs each transaction to the provider most likely to authorize it).
Benchmarks vary significantly by transaction type, geography, and payment method. For domestic card-present transactions in mature markets, authorization rates above 97% are standard. For card-not-present e-commerce, 90-95% is typical, with variation based on the merchant's category, checkout experience, and fraud management approach.
The terms are used interchangeably in most industry contexts and mean the same thing: the share of submitted transactions that receive an approval response. Some practitioners make a distinction between gross authorization rate (approvals as a share of all submitted transactions, including those rejected for technical reasons before reaching the issuer) and net authorization rate (approvals as a share of transactions that actually reached the issuer for a decision).
Spreedly improves authorization rates through several mechanisms. Dynamic Routing directs each transaction to the gateway with the highest historical authorization rate for that transaction profile. Network Tokenization reduces false declines by providing cryptographic authentication that issuers trust. Card Lifecycle Management keeps stored payment credentials current, preventing failures from outdated card data.
