Gateway agnostic describes a payment architecture or infrastructure component that operates independently of any specific payment gateway, one that works equally well with any gateway in an ecosystem, without being tied to the proprietary features, data formats, or commercial terms of a single provider. A gateway-agnostic payment vault, for example, stores payment tokens that can be used to process transactions through any connected gateway, not just the one that originally tokenized the card.
The opposite of gateway agnostic is gateway locked, a situation where a merchant's payment infrastructure, payment method data, or transaction logic is so deeply tied to a single gateway that switching or adding providers requires significant rework. Gateway lock-in is one of the most common and costly constraints in payment operations. When a merchant's tokens live in a gateway-specific vault, every stored payment method is effectively a dependency on that gateway. When a merchant's checkout is built directly against a single gateway's API, adding a second gateway means a new integration project.
Gateway agnosticism is the architectural principle that Payments Orchestration Platforms are built on. Spreedly's platform is explicitly designed to be gateway agnostic: the API is consistent regardless of which gateway processes a transaction, the vault stores tokens that work across the entire connected ecosystem, and routing logic can direct any transaction to any provider without application-layer changes. Merchants that build on a gateway-agnostic platform retain perpetual freedom to add, remove, or change gateway relationships based on performance and commercial considerations.
On a gateway-agnostic platform, the merchant integrates once to the platform's API, not to each individual gateway. The platform normalizes the different request and response formats of each gateway behind a consistent API surface. When a new gateway is added, the merchant's integration does not change.
Yes, and this is an underappreciated benefit. A merchant that integrates with a gateway-agnostic Payments Orchestration Platform while currently using only one gateway has built the optionality to add additional gateways in the future without any integration work. The gateway agnosticism is latent but immediately available.
Supporting multiple gateways describes a capability, the system can connect to more than one gateway. Gateway agnostic describes an architectural principle, the system is not dependent on any specific gateway and treats all gateways equivalently. A system can support multiple gateways but still be gateway-specific in its architecture: for example, if each gateway requires a different API integration, the system supports multiple gateways but is not gateway agnostic.
