A multi-rail strategy is the deliberate use of multiple payment networks, card rails, ACH rails, real-time payment rails, bank transfer rails, across a business's payment operations, routing each transaction type to the network best suited to it based on cost, speed, geographic coverage, and customer preference.
The strategic logic is the same as the case for Multi-Gateway Strategy in card payments, but applied to the level of the underlying payment network. Different rails have different characteristics that make them optimal for different use cases. ACH (Automated Clearing House) is low-cost but not instantaneous, making it well-suited for large B2B invoice payments and payroll. Card rails are universally accepted by consumers and offer buyer protections, making them ideal for e-commerce. Real-time payment networks like RTP, PIX, and Faster Payments offer instant settlement, making them attractive for time-sensitive payouts and disbursements. SEPA provides cost-effective euro-denominated transfers across Europe.
A business operating on a single rail is constrained by that rail's characteristics. A B2B platform that only supports card payments is paying Interchange Fees on large invoice payments where ACH would cost a fraction of the amount. A gig economy platform that only supports ACH for worker payouts cannot offer instant settlement without adding a real-time rail. A multi-rail strategy eliminates these constraints by giving the payment system the ability to choose the optimal network for each transaction.
Payments Orchestration Platforms are increasingly the practical infrastructure for multi-rail strategies, providing a single integration that spans multiple rail types rather than requiring the business to build and maintain separate integrations for each network.
Rail selection logic typically considers several factors: transaction amount (large B2B payments often route to ACH or bank transfer rails to avoid card fees), speed requirements (time-sensitive payouts route to real-time rails), geographic destination (international payments may use SWIFT or regional bank transfer rails), customer payment method preference (consumer purchases default to card rails), and cost optimization rules (least-cost routing across available rails). Configuring this logic in a Payments Orchestration Platform rather than hardcoding it allows the business to adjust its routing rules as rail costs, capabilities, and business priorities change.
Least Cost Routing (LCR) in a multi-rail context means automatically selecting the lowest-cost network available for a given transaction without compromising on speed or reliability requirements. This is most prominent in markets like Australia, where regulators have required merchants to be able to route eligible debit transactions to the cheapest available network.
It does introduce complexity, but a Payments Orchestration Platform is specifically designed to manage that complexity. Without orchestration, each rail requires a separate integration, separate reconciliation, and separate reporting. With orchestration, the platform handles the integration and provides a unified view of transactions across all rails.
