Payment rails are the underlying infrastructure networks and protocols over which financial transactions travel. When a card payment is made, the transaction data and funds flow over card network rails, the infrastructure owned and operated by Visa, Mastercard, or other card schemes. When a bank transfer is made, funds travel over different rails: ACH in the United States, SEPA in Europe, Faster Payments in the UK, PIX in Brazil, or SWIFT for international wire transfers.
The concept of "rails" is a useful mental model because different rails have different characteristics: different speeds (card network rails settle in days; real-time payment rails settle in seconds), different costs (card network rails carry Interchange Fees and Scheme Fees; ACH rails are significantly cheaper), different geographic scope (SWIFT is global; ACH is US-only), and different participant requirements (accessing card network rails requires an Acquirer relationship; ACH rails require an ODFI or Third-Party Sender (TPS) relationship).
Choosing which rails to support is a meaningful strategic decision for any payments business. Card rails are essential for consumer payments globally and offer broad acceptance and consumer protections. ACH rails are cost-effective for B2B payments, payroll, and recurring billing in the US. Real-time payment rails (RTP, PIX, UPI) are increasingly important for markets where instant payment is an expectation rather than a premium feature.
A Multi-Rail Strategy, deliberately supporting multiple rail types to serve different transaction types, markets, and customer preferences, is a defining characteristic of mature payment architectures. Payments Orchestration Platforms facilitate multi-rail strategies by providing connections to services across multiple rail types through a single integration.
Card rails (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are operated by card networks and route transactions through Issuers and Acquirers. They are widely accepted, offer consumer protections and dispute mechanisms, and carry fees in the form of Interchange and scheme fees. Bank rails (ACH, SEPA, Faster Payments, SWIFT) route transactions directly between bank accounts through banking networks.
Settlement timing is a function of how each rail handles clearing and funds movement between financial institutions. Card network rails typically settle net funds to merchants within one to two business days after authorization. ACH rails in the US typically settle in one to two business days as well, though same-day ACH is available.
Not typically within a single transaction, a payment travels over one set of rails from start to finish. However, businesses can and do use different rails for different transaction types. A marketplace might accept consumer payments over card rails and pay out to sellers over ACH rails, for example.
