A payment processor is the technology intermediary that moves transaction data between the merchant, the acquiring bank, the card network, and the issuing bank. When a customer pays for something, the processor receives the transaction details, formats them according to network specifications, routes them to the appropriate card network for authorization, receives the authorization response, and returns it to the merchant, all in a matter of seconds.
Processors also handle the clearing and settlement process: after authorization, they batch and submit transactions to the card networks, which settle funds between acquiring and issuing banks. The processor's role is fundamentally about data routing, message formatting, and technical connectivity rather than financial risk.
The processor is distinct from the Acquirer, though many large acquirers also act as their own processors. There are also independent processors, companies like TSYS, FIS, and Worldpay, that provide processing services to acquirers without necessarily holding merchant funds.
For merchants, the processor is often invisible. They interact with a Payment Gateway, which presents a developer-friendly API layer over the processor's underlying capabilities. In modern architectures, the distinction between gateway and processor has blurred significantly, Stripe, Adyen, and similar platforms act as gateway, processor, and acquirer simultaneously.
Payment processors are distinct from Payments Orchestration Platforms, which sit above the processor layer and enable merchants to connect to and intelligently route transactions across multiple processors, gateways, and payment services through a single integration.
A Payment Gateway is the interface layer through which merchants submit transactions, it receives the transaction data, encrypts it, and passes it to the processor. The processor handles the actual routing and communication with the card networks and issuing bank. In practice, many modern payment platforms combine gateway and processor functions.
Yes, and increasingly, sophisticated merchants do. Using multiple processors (and acquirers) is a core strategy for improving authorization rates, reducing dependency on any single provider, and accessing the best pricing in each market.
Processors typically charge a per-transaction fee and/or a small percentage of transaction value, on top of pass-through Interchange Fees from the card networks. Pricing models include flat-rate, Interchange-Plus Pricing, and tiered pricing. The specific fees vary significantly by processor, merchant volume, and business type.
