SME review required: SME / Product review required before publication, confirm current Receiver capabilities and use cases.
In Spreedly's platform, a Receiver is a configured endpoint that enables the secure delivery of tokenized payment method data, including, where necessary, the underlying sensitive card data, to authorized third-party systems. Receivers allow merchants to use payment credentials stored in the Spreedly vault to fulfill obligations with external partners who require access to payment method data: fulfillment providers, insurance systems, travel booking APIs, or any third-party service that needs to receive payment information as part of a workflow.
The challenge Receivers address is a common one in complex payment architectures. A merchant stores customer payment credentials in the Spreedly vault to protect their PCI Scope. But a downstream partner, a hotel booking system, an airline reservation platform, a car rental API, requires access to the actual card data to complete a booking or authorization. Without a controlled delivery mechanism, the merchant would need to either expose their vault to the partner directly (a PCI risk) or ask customers to re-enter their cards on each partner platform (a poor experience).
Spreedly Receivers provide a secure, auditable delivery channel: the merchant sends a Deliver request specifying which payment method token to use and which receiver endpoint to send it to, and Spreedly injects the appropriate credential values (card number, expiration date, CVV) into a request formatted for the partner's API. The card data travels directly from the Spreedly vault to the authorized partner endpoint, without passing through the merchant's own infrastructure.
This mechanism is particularly important in travel, where payment credentials frequently need to be passed to multiple service providers in a booking flow, and in any industry where payment credentials serve as both a payment instrument and an identity credential for downstream systems.
*(Note: "Receiver" in this context is Spreedly-specific terminology for payment method distribution. It is distinct from the use of "receiver" in ACH payment contexts, where it refers to the party receiving funds in a bank transfer.)*
A standard Spreedly transaction sends a payment authorization request to a connected gateway and returns an authorization response, it processes a payment. A Receiver Deliver request sends payment credential data to a third-party API endpoint, it distributes payment data to a partner system.
Yes. The Receiver mechanism is specifically designed to keep sensitive card data out of the merchant's own infrastructure. The merchant's application sends a request to Spreedly specifying which token to deliver and to which endpoint, it never handles the raw card data itself.
Any third-party system with an accessible API endpoint can be configured as a Receiver in Spreedly. Common use cases include travel GDS and booking systems, hotel and airline reservation APIs, insurance systems that need card data for billing, and any partner platform that requires payment credentials as part of an integrated workflow.
