Tokenization is the process of replacing sensitive payment data, most commonly the Primary Account Number (PAN), but potentially other sensitive fields, with a randomly generated, non-sensitive substitute value called a token. The token can be stored and used to reference the original payment data in future transactions without exposing the actual card number to systems or parties that do not need access to it.
The defining characteristic of a token is that it has no mathematical or algorithmic relationship to the original data it replaces. Unlike Encryption, which transforms data using a mathematical function that can be reversed with the appropriate key, tokenization is simply a substitution, the token is a random reference value, and the mapping between token and original data is maintained securely by the tokenization system (the Payment Vault). There is nothing in the token itself that could be used to recover the original PAN, even by an attacker who obtains the token.
This property makes tokenization the preferred approach for reducing PCI Scope. Once a PAN is replaced by a token in a merchant's systems, those systems no longer contain cardholder data, they contain tokens. A token that has been properly de-scoped (removed from the Cardholder Data Environment (CDE)) is not subject to PCI DSS controls in the same way as the PAN it replaced. The merchant's compliance burden shrinks accordingly.
Tokenization exists in several forms in payments. Vault tokenization (provider-specific tokens issued by a payment gateway or orchestration platform) is the most common form for merchants storing payment methods for future use. Network Tokenization is a distinct form where the card network itself issues the token, enabling performance benefits in the authorization flow. Both forms protect the underlying PAN, but they serve different purposes and have different technical properties.
No, they are fundamentally different techniques. Encryption transforms data using a cryptographic algorithm, producing an encrypted output that can be decrypted back to the original with the correct key. The encrypted data is still sensitive (it is just obscured), and if the key is compromised, all encrypted data is exposed. Tokenization replaces data with a random reference value with no relationship to the original.
A payment token stolen from a merchant's systems cannot be used to derive the underlying card number or make unauthorized purchases at other merchants. However, a token stolen along with the API credentials of the merchant that issued it could potentially be used to initiate unauthorized transactions through that merchant's payment system. This is why token security requires both the protection of the token values themselves and the protection of the authentication credentials (API keys) used to transact with them.
A **payment token** (or vault token) is issued by a Payment Vault such as Spreedly and is a provider-agnostic reference to a stored payment method. A **Network Token** is issued by a card network (Visa, Mastercard) and is used in the authorization flow itself, carrying cryptographic authentication that improves authorization rates. A **gateway token** is issued by a specific gateway and can only be used for transactions through that gateway, the most limiting form from a portability perspective.
